(138) Question:- |
Describe briefly the battle of Amritsar. |
Answer:- |
This battle fougnt in 1628 AD was the first battle between the Sikhs and the Mutthal Army. The rigid attitude of Shahjahan, a modification in the policy of the Guru and the incident of Kaulan, the daughter of a Quazi at Lahore were some of the reasons which led of this battle. The immediate cause was the possession of a hawk of emperor Shahjahan by the Sikhs. It was just incidental that emperor Shahjahan and Guru Hargobind were once on a hunting expedition in an area lying between Amritsar and Lahore Without knowing and meeting each other, they were hunting at nearby places. Emperor Shahjahan had a rare white hawk which was given to him as a present by king of Iran. This Hawk following a duck fled over the area in which the Guru's Sikhs were hunting and fell in theirpossession. When the Emperor's men approached them for returning the hawk, they behaved arrogantly and used derogatory language for the Guru and his Sikhs. The quarrel over the Hawk turned into a battle when the Emperor sent Mukhlis Khan, one of his trusted Generals to lead an army of seven thousand persons against
the Sikhs. Although, there was a scarcity of trained and professional soldiers among the Sikhs. and the Sikhs were mainly busy in the Preparations for the approaching marriage of Guru's daughter Viro Ji. the Sikhs accepted the challenge and took up their positions with their swords and arrows near 1.oligarli fortress outside the city of Amritsar, While describing this battle, Macauliff has mentioned that the Guru's Sikhs used even hollow trees as converted weapons of artillery and discharged stones from them. Gum's wives and children alongwith certain valuables kept for the purpose of marriage were removed to a house near Ramsar. The Guru prayed in the Harimandir and inspired his persons to give a tough tight. The Sikhs fought so vigorously that seasoned Mughal Generals like Shamas Khan. Anwar Khan and Mukhlis Khan had z.) give in. The brave Sikhs like Singha, Bhai Joti Mal, Bhais Nanda, Piraga, Bhima and Bhikhan cut off the heads, arms and legs of a large number of their adversaries. The Guru himself fought with Mukhalis Khan and cut his head in twain. Ultimately, the Sikhs won the battle. The place where this battle was fought is now called Sangraita and a Shrine commemorates this event and the victory of the Guru at this place, where a fair is held at the time of the full moon in the month of Baisakh every year. |
