(19) Question:- What is meant by a Gurdwara? Mention some of the important Books or source material which may provide useful information regarding the Sikh Shrines.
Answer:- A Gurdwara literally means the house of a Guru. It is already explained in an earlier answer that in Sikh Religion, Dharmsalas were serving not only as places where the travellers were served with food and shelter but also where Sikh devotees used to assemble for singing hymns and remembrance of God. When, at the time of Guru Hargobind, the practice of installing Guru Granth Sahib Ji in these Dharmsalas was started, the Dharmsalas came to be known as Gurdwaras. Thus at present a Gurdwara is a place where Guru Granth Shib is installed. Apart from this fact, its distinguishing mark is the Nishan Sahib or the Sikh Flag, saffron or Blue in colour, that flies day and night atop the building or very close to it.
One of the earliest significant works dealing with the exclusive subject of Gurdwaras was Sri Guru Teerath Sangrah by Pandit Tara Singh Narottam. The contribution of this scholar of Nirmala Sect has already been mentioned in a separate answer. Another scholar, who produced a work regarding Gurdwaras was Giani Thakur Singh. This book was known as Gurdwara Darshan. There is another rare book on Gurdwaras by Gani Gian Singh. This book entitled as Gurdham Sangrain has been recently published by SGPC. The SGPC has also published a book on Sikh Gurdwaras in Pakistan. A very important book on Sikh Gurdwaras has been written by S. Patwant Singh and published by Himalya Books, Delhi. This voluminous book contains information about almost all the Gurdwaras of the world both in English & Punjabi. It also contains photographs of all historical Gurdwaras. Mention may be made of another book entitled Historical Sikh Shrines written by Major Gurmukh Singh and published by Singh Bros., Amritsar. Some books on Gurdwaras have also been published in Pakistan and are of great value. For example, the Sacred Shrines of Sikhs in Pakistan by Iqbal Kesar, published recently, is likely to prove a document of great significance. Apart from mentioning a brief history of the Sikh Gurus and their basic tenets, it contains a valuable information on the history of Sikh Gurdwaras. Last, but not the least is the important publication of Kes Sambhal Parchar Sanstha, entitled as 'Some Prominent Gurdwaras & Sikh Organizations of the World'.
